ADAC: Heinz-Harald Frentzen Interview

Written by GT Masters
Heinz-Harald Frentzen (44, Dusseledorf) just completed a full season in the ADAC GT Masters Championship. The former Formula 1 world vice-champion and DTM driver drive a Callaway Competition Z06R Corvette with co-driver Sven Hannawald (37, Munich) for the entire season. Heinz-Harald spent the season mentoring Sven to help him hone his competition driving skills. The duo had a very competitive season and missed a third place podium finish by the narrowest of margins in Austria.
Mr. Frentzen, how do you sum up your first season in the ADAC GT Masters?
HHF: “I am very satisfied, but did not realize how competitive the series is. The large 40+ starting field was a surprise to everyone and this made the series very demanding. You feel funny sitting in twentieth position until you realize that you have twenty other cars behind you! For me it was a very exciting season.”
Your goal for the season was to make Hannawald faster. Did you succeed?
“The role of driving instructor was a new role for me, but it was a lot of fun. When working with Sven you quickly realize that he is a professional athlete. It is interesting to watch Sven evolve in his new motor sports career. He has made a huge leap forward in driving skill. Our first test of the season was at Hockenheim before the season started. Our last race was at the same track so we had a good reference on how much he progressed. Aside from pure lap times, the data shows how Sven has improved constantly throughout the circuit. This really pleases me and I think in the future he will make another big leap forward.”
What was your personal season highlight?
“I have many fond memories, especially the second half of the season where we were often in the top group. The highlight was certainly the race at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. We missed the overall podium by 1.6 seconds and finished fourth. It was a brilliant performance.”
Do you have plans to compete in the 2012 ADAC GT Master series?
“I have several options that I am exploring. My plans for next year are currently still open.
