FIA GT Preview: Adria

The FIA GT Championship remains in Italy, but moves southwards, to a track which is The two circuits are almost diametrically opposed : Monza is one of the oldest circuits, with decades of history, a long, powerful circuit, the fastest in Europe. Adria, short and twisting, is one of the most recent tracks, built in 2002, and one of the most innovative.

Starting before sunset, the cars should drive through the twilight into the night. Always a special event, this should create a really special atmosphere for the spectators, both at the track and on television. The race will be held on Saturday evening, racing into the sunset and beyond.

Although the Total 24 Hours of Spa obviously runs around the clock, shorter night races are somewhat unusual circumstances in the history of the FIA GT Championship. Apart from last year, the most recent FIA GT night race was back in 2002 at the Silverstone track in Great Britan. With its exceptional covered paddock, and the asphalt-covered runoff areas, it is hard on the brakes and tyres.

After Monza’s long straights and fast corners, it will be interesting to see how the cars adapt to Adria’s twists and turns. The Championship is extremely close, with the top eight drivers separated by just three points. After only two rounds, Corvette currently leads the drivers title with the SRT team of Bouchut and Massen. Close behind in 4th is the GMAC Phoenix Carsport duo of Mike Hezemans
and Fabrizio Gollin.

Despite the differences between the tracks, 2007 saw remarkable similarity between the results from the FIA GT races. Karl Wendlinger took pole on both occasions, as did Paolo Ruberti in GT2. Unlike both previous races, held later in the season, the cars will be lighter this year, with only the Monza podium finishers carrying success ballast in GT1. And as the weight is usually an issue on the short, tight track, this could be a factor this coming weekend.
