Callaway Competition confirmed the lineup for their second car for the 2008 FIA GT3
Championship. After a thrilling 2007 season winning the team title, the early part of the 2008 year came with some unfortunate news. Team owner and friend, Uli Martini had to retire from competition to handle urgent business matters. This made a second car available for sale.
Meanwhile the team ran as a single entry for opening rounds of the 2008 FIA GT3 Championship at Silverstone. While there, the team finished seventh and second in the first two races with drivers James Ruffier and Arnaud Peyroles. Callaway opted to run only two cars for the 2008 season. This was a more logical choice for easing the strain on daily operations and management of the Callaway team.
The new drivers for the second car will consist of ex-Zakspeed Saleen S7R driver Sascha Bert and Mr. Alois Meir, the cars new owner. Mr. Meir purchased the Nr. 16 Callaway Z06R that Mr. Martini campaigned last season, and will be updated to full 2008 specs.
For the engineering side, Mr. Helmut Gay (who also runs Porsches with his own team in different series) will be in charge of engineering the car for the season.
Mr Meir has already had a sucessful shakedown of the car at Dijion as well as running it for the first time last weekend in the ADAC GT masters. Both him and Mr. Bert are very eager and ready to start the 2008 season in high gear at the 3rd and 4th rounds in Monza, Italy the 18th of May.
