FIA GT3 Monza: Race 1 Report

The No.21 car pitted normally, but both the No.20 and No.43 cars left their stops too late - they left the pit-lane after the 'pit-stop window' had closed.

Once they had pitted the No.43 Dodge managed to catch the No.20 car, overtaking into the first chicane at the start of lap 24; the top three then remained static to the end of the race. However, the pit-stop problems resulted in the No.43 and No.20 cars receiving stop-go penalties, but because the penalties came so late in the race, both cars stayed out and took the finish.

The Nr 21 Ford GT was third and the Nr 1 Martini-Callaway Corvette was fourth.

However, the stewards added 63sec to the overall time of the No.20 car, and 77sec to the time of the No.43 car. That took the Viper from first to fifth, and the Ford from second to third. The No.21 Ford GT was given it’s second win of the weekend.

Second went to the No.1 Martini Callaway Racing Corvette Z06R of Ruffier/Peyroles. The Nr 2 Martini-Callaway Corvette was 30th and neither the Sourd Racing or M&M Racing Corvettes finished.

The Nr 20 Ford GT drivers Khan/Mutsch still lead the championship with 26 points. Ruffier/ Peyroles are second with 24 points and Ellis/Mortimer are third with 22 points.

Ruffier/Peyroles drove a brilliant race by staying out of trouble and staying in the championship in spite of the Ford GT’s obvious performance advantage. Congratulations to the Martini-Callaway team for a brilliant Monza performance. They leave Monza with a 3rd and 2nd place podium finishes. Next round Oschersleben July 5 & 6th, stay tuned.
