FIA GT3 Monza: Race 2 Report

Z06R Monza

Monza, Italy – Once again, Race 2 at Monza was full of surprises for the GT3 competitiors. The Ford GT’s continue to be the dominant force in the championship. They qualified in wet conditions 1st and 3rd on the starting grid.

Sascha Bert put the Nr 2 Martini-Callaway Z06R fourth on the grid .6 seconds behind the Nr 21 Ford GT. The Nr 1 Martini-Callaway driven by James Ruffier was 10th fastest. Marc Sourd was 14th in his Callaway Corvette and the M&M Racing Callaway Corvette was 18th driven by Juri Skula.

At the start of the race the track was very wet, but no rain was falling. The wet track required the teams to run rain tires. Slicks were never an option - and, just as the track began to dry, more rain fell. At the beginning of the race the Nr 11 Ferrari held the lead until it was passed by the Nr 20 and 21 Ford GT’s.

The No.43 Dodge Viper Competition Coupe passed the Ferrari to take third. The Nr 2 Martini-Callaway Corvette was slowly falling back due to handing problems. The Nr 1 Corvette had moved up to fifth and things stayed that way to the pit-stops - and that was where things went wrong.
