Corvette Europe Brand Manager Koos Pettinga announced that Corvette is the Official 2008 Safety and Leading Car for the FIA GT Championship. In addition Corvette will pace the FIA GT3 European Championship and the GT4 European Championship.
Corvette Europe supplied two Corvette Z06 models at Silverstone and Monza as Safety and Leading cars. Both Z06 models performed flawlessly during these two events.
After this successful experience the SRO Motorsports Group approved Corvette to become the Official Car for 2008. The full program will begin on June 21st at Adria (Italy) according to Pettinga. The program will continue through the season to the final FIA GT3 Championship race in Dubai and the final FIA GT Championship race in San Luis, Argentina. The official cars will include two Corvette Z06 models as Safety and Leading cars. In addition a Cadillac CTS 3.6 will be the Medical Car and a Cadillac Escalade
will be the Course Car.
Corvette, Cadillac and HUMMER will be on public display in the paddock at many of the events via local dealer support. Corvette, Cadillac HUMMER (CCH) Managing Director Gerard Jansen is pleased with the opportunity to display new products during the FIA GT races. “Our three brands are in the middle of a product renaissance. Cadillac offers incredible competitive alternative for the established brands. The same goes for Corvette, the C6 not only offers great performance/price ratio but also shows it can compete with any other sports car brand on the track or public roads. It is just fantastic that the racing teams, public at the track and the millions of TV viewers will be in direct contact with our products.”
Stephane Ratel, Chairman of SRO Motorsports Group commented, “Corvette is a perfect Official Car Supplier for us. Their cars have played a leading role on the track in recent years, winning the Total 24 Hours of Spa last year (2007) as well as the Team Championship in the 2007 FIA GT3 Championship. So it is pleasing to see them play an official role as well. SRO looks forward to growing this partnership together with Corvette and General Motors.”
Pettinga points out “the Corvette C6R recently won its first 2008 FIA race at Monza. The Franco-Dutch line up of Christophe Bouchut and Xavier Maassen drove the SRT C6R to victory. In the FIA GT3 Championship, the Martini Callaway Corvette Z06 R of James Ruffier and Arnaud Peyroles are second in the championship. We are very excited that the Corvette Brand is doing so well in these competitive championships.”
